The long and bitter lawsuit regarding five Cincinnati councilmembers who conducted City business by text message on personal cellphones outside of public meetings was settled for $101,000 last week. The so called "Gang of Five" admitted to violating Sunshine Law. This case has been the subject of intense media coverage including publication of thousands of embarrassing text messages between councilmembers. This case serves as an important reminder to not conduct public business outside of a public meeting via text message, consult your Prosecutor's Office or legal advisor regarding public records and Sunshine Law before texting about matters that may touch on public business, and use extreme caution when texting colleagues.
