I am the EMA Director and Loss Control Coordinator for Hardin County. Each dept. head is basically responsible for their intra-dept. safety issues, however, I arrange for a BWC Safety Consultant to accompany me when I do annual walk through safety checks of all Hardin County facilities. This provides an opportunity for all of us to note any safety issues or concerns and work to address them. Plus some of the day-to-day safety concerns come through my office and I try to get an answer to various dept.’s questions. Hardin County does not have an HR person, instead relying on the Prosecutor’s Office to determine most HR issues that come up, plus using CORSA’s Best Practices. I handle all the workers comp. claims from start to finish. We also have a local private insurance agency to aid in our property and liability insurance coverage, who helps us in keeping CORSA aware of any potential claims and incidents. Our Commissioners’ Clerks will help with any of these areas, especially if I am out of the office for a day or a week for sickness or vacation. When I return they apprise me of any situation that came up while I was out. I would think that most small counties have people who wear multiple hats. Who is in charge of safety issues and who is your Loss Control Coordinator? Do you have an HR Person to handle insurance, WC and insurance issues? Does your Commissioners' Clerk handle any of this? Thanks for your help.
