Good morning everyone, I hope your summer has gone well and you were able to enjoy some of the nice growing weather we are finally starting to receive. I wanted to pass along a technical bulletin (see below) that I received from Ohio LTAP. In the past, CORSA has paid a few claims where the underlying cause was vegetation obstructing a road sign. Feel free to share with the County Engineer and whomever else may benefit. Vegetation Management Resources are Available As summer is in full swing, roadway signs are becoming less visible in many locations due to tree and plant growth. Vegetation seems to grow over night and on our roadways, vegetation can block drivers' views of traffic signs. It is important to address vegetation management concerns on roadways to keep all of your signs and other roadway features visible. To help you with this task, we have identified a couple of easy-to-use resources: 1. Vegetation Control for Safety: A Guide for Local Highway and Street Maintenance Personnel - This is a booklet developed by the Federal Highway Administration and available for free download at: http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/local_rural/training/fhwasa07018/ The booklet provides a great checklist for your vegetation management program, including: * Sign Visibility * Clear Sight Lines * Drainage * Side Road Visibility * Roadside Trees 2. NHI Web-based Training Course - Roadside Vegetation Management - This is a free online course provided by the National Highway Institute (NHI). You can link to the course information and registration information at: http://www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov/training/course_search.aspx#course_search.aspx?t... Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to: * Describe why vegetation control is important to roadway safety and performance * Identify the types of equipment used for mechanical vegetation control * Identify types of herbicide vegetation management methods, their use, environmental control, and precautions * Describe the requirements of a noxious weed control program This Web-based course is still free of charge through the end of 2015. Per NHI, please note that a fee of $25 per participant will be implemented starting in 2016. The Ohio LTAP Center 1980 W.
