Good afternoon all, We are working on getting a more formal memo out to everyone explaining the Supreme Court's decision on same sex marriage and how it will impact our policies and agreements that are currently in place in some member counties. There will also be some exciting news on a new publication from the Best Practice Panel. For now, no modification to the policies contained in the Best Practice Personnel Manual is required as a result of the Court's decision. No modification is required because the BPP Manual does not define the terms "spouse," or "immediate family member," as recognizing only opposite-sex marriages. The policies contained in the BPP Manual do not conflict with the legal recognition of same-sex marriage. Keep in mind that you should comprehensively review employment policies, benefits, collective bargaining agreements, and any other documents governing benefits to ensure same-sex spouses are not inadvertently denied benefits or policy protections. As always, consult your legal counsel and HR Professionals for advice on interpretation of the new decision.
