U-69 Workers Comp Contract Coverage
Does your county have contract coverage with the BWC that covers your non-emergency volunteers and/or probationers (U-69 coverage)? If so, could you please share your Commissioners' Resolution that authorized this coverage? Thanks, Beth Elizabeth G. Miller, Esq. No; we do not. The rationale is that you have to pay a premium based on a 10-hour work week at minimum wage and keep track of every individual volunteer. We believe that most volunteers are okay with using their own health insurance, and Workers' Comp coverage is cost prohibitive because of these minimum requirements. Also, with volunteers coming and going, it could easily happen that a volunteer wouldn't be listed and thus wouldn't be covered. After much discussion between our Juvenile Court Judge, County Prosecutor, the County Commissioners, and myself, these are the considerations we used to terminate our U-69 coverage in 2014. Please review to determine if the pros and cons are as applicable today as they were then and forward if you wish. Max Trachsel Hardin Co.
