HSA Employer Match
Good morning and Happy New Year everyone! For those of you that offer a high deductible health plan and offer an HSA contribution or match incentive, when do you deposit the employer contribution/match e.g., annually, quarterly, per pay? We currently deposit the full employer match into the employee's account in January so employees have those funds to use throughout the year (as an incentive to join the HDHP rather than the County's PPO plan). However, there has been "grumblings" that employees' take the employer match and run before actually contributing their employee portion of the match (which is deducted each pay period). For example, if an employee resigns in February , they haven't made their required employee match. While our records show that this has happened on rare occasions, the suggestion on the table is to be pro-active and to ensure that exposure is limited by spreading the employer deposit out over the course of the year - semi-annually, quarterly, or even monthly. Muskingum County makes the HSA contributions as follows: - 2nd Pay in January = 50% of Employer Contribution - 1st Pay in July = 25% of Employer Contribution - 1st Pay in October = 25% of Employer Contribution The amount of the Employer Contribution is dependent upon Coverage Election: - Employee Only = $820 - Employee + 1 = $1,475 - Family = $2,140 Thanks! Henry County deposits the funds into the HSA in January. No grumblings here. Most employees who leave or retire within the year call to ask if they have to reimburse that portion back to the county. When I tell them that is their money, they're very happy. Good Morning- Butler County splits the contribution into 4 deposits and front loads the deposits. Our Commissions provide $600 to single HDHP employees as follows: $300 in January, then $100 in the months of April, July and October. All other tiers of HDHP coverage receive $1,200 as follows: $600 in January and then $200 in the months of April, July and October. Hi Laurie and all, Erie County provides a match of $400 single and $800 family, which is currently deposited into accounts in January. The match will most likely be spread out over the year come 2019, per my earlier email. At one point we also offered a "contribution" of the same amounts for the first two years of participation e.g., a new enrollee would receive the $400 match plus a $400 contribution, or $800.00 (double for family). We changed that last year to only the first year and for 2018 we dropped the "contribution" amount all together, and now only offer the match. We also started charging a "premium" if you will in 2017 - $12/month single and $36 family. Our renewal costs were flat this year so everyone is paying 2017 rates for the 2018 plans (HSA and PPO). Ottawa County gave that consideration when we did our first employer contribution last year. We do a deposit at the end of January and again at the end of July - just to avoid what you are referring to.
