Proper grooming, good personal hygiene, and clean attire are required at all times. Department heads may establish guidelines for workplace-appropriate attire and grooming for their specific work setting, for the work being performed, as well as for exceptional circumstances such as weather and holidays; any questions about the department’s guidelines should be discussed with the immediate supervisor. Examples of appropriate clothing include (but not limited to): Shirts, sweaters, skirts, khaki or corduroy pants, polo collar knit or golf shirts, oxford shirts, dresses, ties, slacks, trousers, suits, blazers or sport coats, turtlenecks, blouses, dress shoes, boat/deck shoes, dress sandals, dress boots, professional looking capris slacks, denim skirts/dresses/jackets. Examples of inappropriate clothing and/or grooming include (but not limited to): Shorts, blue jeans, overalls, T-shirts, sweat shirts, halter tops/spaghetti straps, tank/tube tops, muscle shirts, spandex/liquid/tight-fitting pants, yoga pants, leggings (unless worn with long-length tunic blouse/jacket/sweater top), athletic/exercise wear, crop tops, visible undergarments, sundresses (unless worn with a jacket/sweater), sweat suits or sweat pants/jackets, natural or artificial scents that could be distracting or annoying to others, visible tattoos that have slogans or images that are demeaning or feature profanity, clothing with writings/graphics (other than County/Department name/logo), pajama pants, visible body piercings (that pose a safety issue to employee or others) beachwear, flip flops/thongs, sneakers, running shoes, croc-like sandals, hiking boots, or bare feet are not appropriate and are not acceptable. With prior approval from the Department Head/Supervisor, it may be acceptable for staff to wear jeans, shorts, or other casual attire for special projects such as the cleaning of offices, moving files, and/or organizing storage areas, or for casual dress days. Employees must comply with the County dress code and/or the dress code established within their departments. Violations of this policy can range from inappropriate clothing items to offensive perfumes and body odor. If a staff member comes to work in inappropriate dress the corrective action process may require the staff member to go home, change into conforming attire or properly groom, and return to work. The supervisor should discuss the problem with the staff member in private and should point out the specific areas to be corrected. If the problem persists, the supervisor should follow the normal progressive disciplinary process. Uniformed Personnel: Uniforms that are provided to many County employees are expected to be neat and clean when reporting for work. Provided uniforms shall be worn complete and appropriate as issued, while at work. During periods of extremely hot weather, i.e., temperature at 900, uniform shirts may be replaced with plain clean crew neck T-shirts with a County logo, only upon direct approval of your individual department head. Uniforms bearing County identification are not to be worn as off-duty clothing or in combination with off-duty clothing. Uniforms purchased by the County constitute a fringe benefit which must be included on an employee’s W-2. Exemptions and exclusions to this policy shall be determined per IRC § 262 as interpreted by the Erie County Auditor’s office. Employees should check with their supervisor and/or department head as to what items may be included in this policy. Non-Uniformed Personnel: Employees not provided uniforms should wear clothing that is neat, clean, and suitable for the work required. All clothing, accessories and shoes shall be functional and safe for the type work to be performed. Very casual clothing, shorts, play clothes or evening wear are not appropriate. Employee Identification (ID) Badges: ID badges provide a consistent method of identification. The physical presence of ID badges allows other employees and visitors, as well as safety forces to easily identify County staff, especially in times when assistance is needed and/or for identifying intruders. All County employees under the Board of Commissioners are strongly encouraged to wear County issued ID badges which are available by contacting the Human Resources Department. Casual Dress Days: The County Commissioners have approved the following casual dress days for its employees. Casual business dress may be worn instead of the normal business attire on these days. Dress should be casual but tasteful. Examples of inappropriate clothing are listed above. St. Patrick’s Day – March 17th April 1st Administrative Professionals’ Day Celebration Second Friday in June July 3rd Second Friday in August Employee Picnic – August Employee Potluck - October Work Day prior to Ohio State University/University of Michigan Football Game Day before Thanksgiving Employee Potluck - December Christmas Eve New Year’s Eve The County Administrator may grant additional casual dress days and/or the wearing of more casual dress such as appropriate shorts for the County’s annual picnic. Trumbull County’s policy: SECTION 2.9 APPEARANCE 2.9.1 Employees are to dress in a manner that is normally acceptable in business establishments or in a manner that meets the requirements of their duty position. Safety codes and dress requirements will be met at all times. Good personal hygiene along with neat, clean clothing is required at all times. It is expected that all employees will exercise good judgment and dress appropriately for their jobs. In cases of flagrant violations of this policy, the employee may be required to leave the worksite, change to proper dress and return to the office in a timely manner. Employees will not be paid for the time they are away from work changing clothes. The following articles of clothing, while not inclusive, are considered to be unacceptable office attire: • Shorts, spandex, leggings, sportswear skirts, skirts shorter than three (3) inches above the knee; halter and strapless dresses; halter, tube, and midriff tops; T-shirts as outerwear; T-shirts as outerwear with no sleeves; sweatshirts as outerwear with no sleeves; sleeveless tops or dresses without a jacket or sweater; tops with sayings, other than the designer name; denim pants including jump suits and pants suits, of any color; sweat shirts and sweat pants; stirrup pants; spandex or tight cotton pants; bare legs with no hosiery; mini skirts.
