AED Policy & Procedures
Do any other counties have or use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) Policy & Procedure for the usage of this devise, besides the obvious use? Administration Building AED Emergency Response Procedure 20 South Second St. Newark, OH 43055 AED Locations 1. 4th floor, outside Room D 2. Basement, outside Room A The first person on the scene & initial protocol for the unconscious victim is as follows: 1. Assess patient for unresponsiveness a. Direct someone to call 911 b. Send someone else to get the closest AED (basement or fourth floor) 2. Assess breathing a. If not breathing, immediately start chest compressions to the center of the chest (100 compressions per minute) pressing 1-1/2" to 2" in depth until the AED arrives 3. Send someone to the first floor to hold elevator open for Emergency Personnel to arrive and to direct them to the location of the victim. Begin AED treatment: 1. Turn on AED and follow the prompts 2. Dry shave chest with disposable razor, if indicated. Discard razor in a safe manner Wipe chest if wet. 3. Apply defibrillation pads. Make sure the AED pads are placed in the proper location and that they make good skin contact with the chest. Do not place AED pads over the nipple, medication patches or implanted devices. 4. The AED will analyze the patient's heart rhythm and determine if a shock is needed. Do not touch the patient while the AED is analyzing. If a shock is advised, make sure everyone is clear and press the shock button. Once the AED shock has been delivered, immediately start chest compressions, 100 compressions per minute pressing 1-1/2" to 2" in depth. Repeat until the AED advises you to stop to re-analyze or the patient shows signs of improvement. 5. IF No Shock is advised, (do not remove the pads if no shock is advised) start CPR with 100 compressions per minute pressing 1-1/2" to 2" in depth. Repeat compressions until the AED advises you to stop to re-analyze or the patient shows signs of improvement. 6. Continue to follow AED prompts and perform CPR until EMS takes over After incident Please notify either Mindy Allan @ mallan@lcounty.com or ext. 5146 or Michael Albanese @ malbanese@lcounty.com @ ext. 5407 in the Human Resources Department of the incident in which AED was used.
