From: Jones, Cathy Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2022 12:33 PM To: Michelle Long (mlong@guernseycounty.org) <mlong@guernseycounty.org> Subject: Dog pound Michelle: My sister is gathering photos and the building drawing. It may take a bit to get you everything. Maybe tomorrow. The key to have a really good dog pound is having architects who design veterinary or shelter spaces. Having a pretty building that is hard to work in, not safe for employees and spreads disease is not fun. My sister made the base drawing of what she needed and Helen, our architect, made it happen on paper and in reality. Everything in that building is made to be cleaned. Cabinets and walls are made of PCV or formica, not laminate or wood. Lots of drains, surfaces that are poured and sealed with polymers and such. Kennels are designed to reduce stress and aggression and the intake kennels are different from the adoption kennels. We have separate kennels for small dogs and we have a puppy room with large stainless cages. We have meet and greet rooms, a necropsy room, quarantine rooms and a secured code access room accessible from the outside for law enforcement to drop off any animals they get. Both intake/holding and adoption are in separate wings with different air handlers and both have their own dedicated laundry, dish/cleaning rooms. We have a bay for grooming to get dogs suitable for adoption cleaned up for the floor. The kennels rooms have hanging hoses to inhibit cross contamination and trip hazards. We have a vet tech area where we perform base exams, euthanasia and give the vaccines we provide. And like I said, we have indoor and outdoor exercise areas. I'm sure your needs would be on a smaller scale than ours but the fundamentals are still the same. I'm sure if anyone wanted a tour, she'd be glad to help. Say hi to the Commissioners for me.
